I am so thankful that you have chosen to join us on this journey. Over the next 40 days we are going to be looking at God’s Word and letting it guide our prayer. We believe that God has big things in store for SBC. God is going to use these next 40 days to challenge us and lead us to be a more faithful church. I hope that you will be prayerful and pray for big things!
Read: John 13
John 13 is a famous chapter in the Gospel of John. Here we find the pivoting point in Jesus ministry. You know this story, the story of Jesus washing the disciples feet. But in this I find some tremendous encouragement for us as believers during this time that we are currently walking through together. I actually want to begin by asking you to look in this story and see which disciples are present while Jesus is washing the disciples feet. Are any excluded? The answer is all of them and no. That means that Jesus washed Judas’s feet. The one that Jesus knew would betray Him. Jesus humbled Himself and served the man that would lead to His death. That is powerful. But I want to focus on two particular verses that I believe speaks to us today.
John 13:15 “For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”
Now some people take this verse in the literal meaning that they need to wash others feet. What Jesus meant by this is much deeper. Jesus is talking about the entire act. It begins with recognizing the need. Jesus saw that they had not washed their feet. It needed to be done. What needs do you see around you? Do you have an elderly neighbor? Do you know someone that needs your help? Look for needs around you. Secondly, Jesus humbled Himself. This one is huge. It’s not enough to recognize needs, you actually have to do something about it. This is the act of humbling ourselves. During this time so many are being selfish and hoarding so much. They are not thinking of others. As believers we must take the example of Christ and serve others.
John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
How do you show that you are a follower of Jesus? By how you love other Christians. We show our love for God by loving each other. I think that this chapter has a lot to say to us during this time. We have a tremendous opportunity to show the love of Christ during this time, do not neglect each other. We may not assemble in public worship gathering, but we are still the church.
